Why you should attend this event
Within the worlds of finance, business and politics, decision makers often have little understanding of the other spheres and their interconnectedness; the language and discourse within each is often mutually incomprehensible. Views of the other spheres are often massively and dangerously oversimplified.
This mutual misunderstanding, of the other spheres and their intricate interconnectedness, is damaging to society and the economy, especially when governments are increasingly looking to business and finance to address pressing social issues such as net-zero and levelling up.
This reality leads to the need to properly consider and explore questions such as:Â
- How can this mutual incomprehension gap be bridged?Â
- How can finance and business be positively engaged in politics beyond a narrow self-interest? Â
- How can we identify and utilise trigger points which can lead to radical change?Â
- How should we develop a new narrative of the political economy?

Nick is founder/chairman of Climate Bonds Initiative (CBI), founder/director of Radix and Big Tent Ideas Festival and chairman of Callund Consulting. Nick is a senior visiting fellow at Bayes (City University) Business School, where he teaches the emerging global risks course. Nick has worked with the UN, World Bank and over 30 countriesâ governments on climate change and economic development. Nick has won The Presidentâs Award for outstanding contribution to the Actuarial Profession and the Phiatus Award for his charitable efforts. Nickâs book, Finance, Society and Sustainability was recently published by Palgrave Macmillan. Nick is a Freeman of the City of London.

The Rt Hon Sir Vince Cable
Formerly Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, President of the Board of Trade, leader of the Liberal Democrats and Member of Parliament for the Twickenham constituency
The Rt Hon Sir Vince Cable was formerly Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, President of the Board of Trade, leader of the Liberal Democrats and Member of Parliament for the Twickenham constituency. He was a former Chief Economist at Royal Dutch Shell having read economics at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge and obtained his PhD at the University of Glasgow.
His recent book Money and Power describes political leadersâ relationship with economic policy over the last 250 years and explores the interplay between economics and politics.
Other publications include Open Arms (2017), After the Storm: The World Economy and Britainâs Economic Future (2016), Free Radical, A Memoir (2010), The China Conundrum (2021) among others.
Vince is currently a professor in practice at the London School of Economics, and visiting professor at Nottingham University and St Mary University, Chair of HCT Group and Director of RemindMeCare

Dr. Joe Zammit-Lucia

Dr Joe Zammit-Lucia has had extensive experience both in the business and the political worlds. He is a founder of RADIX â a not-for-profit public policy think tank based in the UK, and the RADIX Centre for Business, Politics & Society based in Amsterdam. He is a regular commentator on business and politics in the media.
His new book The New Political Capitalism explores the interrelationship between business and politics and will be published by Bloomsbury Business in February 2022.
Trained as a physician at the University of London, he embarked on an executive career within multinational industry before founding a management consulting firm with offices in Cambridge (UK), New York and Tokyo, achieving sector leadership in its areas of expertise.
He acts as a leadership advisor to senior business leaders. He also acted as a Special Advisor to the Director General at the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and was a member of the Dean’s Advisory Board at the College of Arts, Sciences and Education, Florida International University. He is currently on the Advisory Board of the Singapore Forum for long-term investors and business leaders.
He is a regular commentator on business and political issues with commentary having appeared in the Financial Times, the Guardian, the Economist, CityAM, Reaction, Worldwide Business Review, Comment Central, Finance Monthly, TechRadar, Het Financieele Dagblad (Netherlands), Achgut and Forum (Germany), Vvox (Italy), Agenda Publica (Spain), El PaĂs (Spain) The Stanford Review of Social Innovation (USA), Friends of Europe (Brussels), the Times of Malta.
He is co-author of two previous books: The Death of Liberal Democracy? and Backlash: Saving Globalisation from Itself.

Senior economist working in the asset management industry, responsible primarily for macroeconomic analysis and investment strategy across global emerging markets.
Magdalena Polan is a senior economist working in the asset management industry, responsible primarily for macroeconomic analysis and investment strategy across global emerging markets. Before moving to investment management, she was a senior economist at Goldman Sachs, where she led research coverage of CEE economies, advising financial and corporate investors on the economic outlook, policy conditions, and investment strategies in CEE and wider emerging markets, and commenting frequently on these issues in the CEE and European media.
Prior to that, she spent six years at the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC, where she worked on crisis prevention and resolution, sovereign debt restructurings, development of capital markets, and issues related to monetary policy and sovereign asset and liability management. She also advised a number of governments in these areas.
Her research work has mainly focused on monetary policy, inflation, international trade, and development of capital markets. She holds a MSc in Advanced Economics from KU Leuven and BSc in Economics from Warsaw University. She is also a graduate of Warsawâs Collegium Invisibile where she studied sociology and political science.

Vicky was Chief Economic Adviser for the UK Department for Trade and Industry and Joint Head of the UK Government Economic Service. She was also Chairwoman of the GoodCorporation, an organisation promoting ethical business practices. She has been a visiting professor at the Cass Business School and Imperial College and a visiting fellow at Nuffield College, Oxford. She is a fellow at the RADIX Centre for Business, Politics & Society.
